About the shop and advice
Who are you, and who is this shop for?
Legion of Dogs is a specialist shop for dog gear - from owners buying their first proper collar to handlers competing in IGP/IPO sport. It's run by a family that trains three Belgian Shepherds in IGP/IPO themselves (a dog sport combining tracking, obedience and protection work). The gear here is known from our own work with dogs, and the advice is honest - if something isn't right for your dog, you'll be told straight.
Will you help me choose the right product?
Yes - help with choosing is on offer for any question, even the simplest. Write to info@legionofdogs.pl or call, describe your dog and what you need the gear for, and a specific model and size can be recommended. With prong collars, muzzles and bite sleeves, fitting to the individual dog genuinely matters, so it's better to ask before buying than to guess.
Herman Sprenger prong collars
How do I choose the right Herman Sprenger prong collar size?
The size of a Herman Sprenger prong collar comes down to two things: the dog's neck circumference (which sets the length, i.e. the number of links) and the prong thickness (which sets how the collar spreads pressure). Measure the circumference with a tailor's tape, snug, just below the ears - that's where the collar sits. Prong thickness is chosen for the dog's size and type, in a range from 2.25 to 4.0 mm. Breed alone isn't enough, as two dogs of the same breed can need different sizes. Length is adjusted later by adding or removing links. A full step-by-step guide is in our article on choosing a prong collar size. Not sure? Write to us and we'll help with the size.
Is the Herman Sprenger prong collar safe for my dog?
A prong collar is a training tool meant for on-leash work during active training, not for everyday wear or free running. When fitted correctly, the prongs act evenly around the whole neck, giving the dog a clear signal without point pressure in one spot. It isn't a product for everyone - it takes knowledge and the right technique. If you're wondering whether it's the right choice for your dog, we're happy to help you assess that.
What's the difference between a standard and a semi-slip prong collar?
Both Herman Sprenger prong collars work on the same prong principle, differing in how they adjust under leash tension. The standard version keeps a fixed length once the links are assembled, while the semi-slip version works like a martingale - allowing a limited, controlled tightening under leash tension. If you're unsure which suits your dog, write to us and we'll help pick the model.
What is the ClickLock buckle and the ULTRA-PLUS system?
ClickLock is the Herman Sprenger quick-release buckle - put on and taken off in one move, yet holding firmly under load. The ULTRA-PLUS system lets you adjust the collar's length by adding or removing links in pairs, so once you've settled on the prong thickness, the collar can be fitted exactly to the dog's neck.
Stainless steel, black or Curogan - which prong collar should I choose?
Stainless steel is the most versatile - corrosion-resistant and durable in daily contact with water. Curogan is an anti-allergenic copper alloy that looks like gold - a great pick for dogs sensitive to nickel. The black version has an electroplated coating and serves mainly as an aesthetic finish (the coating can wear over time). If you're torn between materials, write to us and we'll help choose.
Sport and product categories
What is IGP/IPO sport, and how do I start?
IGP (formerly IPO) is a dog sport made up of three parts: tracking, obedience and protection. To start, you usually need the basics of obedience plus motivational toys (balls, dumbbells, bite tugs), while protection gear (bite sleeves, bite wedges, training whips) comes later, once you're working with a helper (the person who trains the protection dog). If you're just starting out, write to us and we'll suggest what's genuinely useful at the beginning.
What's in the "Tracking" category, and what is tracking?
The "Tracking" category is gear for learning to track - one of the three disciplines in IGP sport. The dog learns to follow a scent trail and indicate articles left along the route. You'll find, among other things, markers for laying out the track and articles to retrieve along the tracking route.
What are "bite wedges" and what are they for?
Bite wedges are soft, wedge-shaped tugs used in protection training to teach a correct grip. The dog practises a full, confident grip on them before moving on to work on the sleeve. This is gear mainly for protection sport (IGP/IPO) and work with a helper.
Which bite sleeve or tug should I choose to start?
At the start, grip-building gear usually works best - bite wedges and training tugs, and for young dogs the Junior bite sleeves. Full, hard sleeves for work with an adult dog come later. We carry Raddog and Euro Joe gear in various hardness levels. Tell us what stage your dog is at, and we'll help pick the right model.
Muzzles, food, supplements
How do I choose the right Chopo muzzle size?
A Chopo muzzle is chosen from three measurements of the dog's muzzle: snout length, muzzle width and muzzle height. These are basket muzzles (physiological), meaning the dog can freely open its mouth, drink and pant - important during exertion and in heat. Breed is a good starting point, but the fit comes down to measurements, so it's best to send us those three and we'll point you to the right model.
What is Pala Pet Foods, and is it BARF?
Pala Pet Foods is air-dried raw food, not BARF. It needs no freezer and no soaking in water before serving - low-temperature drying without cooking preserves more of the raw protein's value than classic dry food. The recipes are numbered and contain no grains, gluten or artificial additives. We also carry 100% meat Pala Pet Foods treats.
European Pet Pharmacy supplements - which one for what?
European Pet Pharmacy makes supplements for working, sporting and older dogs. In short: POWER is an energy paste, Sport supports recovery after exertion, Rehydration is electrolytes after dehydration or heat, and Joint Max+ supports the joints. Full composition and purpose are on each product page, and if you're not sure what to choose for your dog, write to us.
