A physiological dog muzzle has an open basket shape that lets your dog open the mouth freely, pant, drink and take treats. Panting is the main way a dog cools down, so during effort and in hot weather your dog can still breathe normally. It is a muzzle to wear for the whole walk, on public transport and in training, not just for a few minutes.
How it differs from a closed muzzle
Tight muzzles that hold the mouth shut, such as nylon sleeves, block panting and drinking. At most they work for a moment at the vet. A physiological muzzle leaves room for the mouth, so a dog accepts it far more easily and does not fight it at every step.
How to choose a basket muzzle
Choosing comes down to two decisions. The model follows your dog's head type: the long snout of a shepherd, the square, heavy head of a Rottweiler or the shorter muzzle of a Boxer. The size follows three measurements: snout length from the eye line to the tip of the nose, width at the widest point (width, not circumference) and height with the mouth closed. Breed is a good starting point, but two dogs of the same breed can need different sizes, and the numbers decide. How to tell the muzzle fits
Your dog can open the mouth and drink, the muzzle does not press on the nose, does not dig in around the eyes and does not slip off when running or shaking.
