The smallest version of the Herman Sprenger ULTRA-PLUS prong collar - a German maker with over 150 years of tradition, whose equipment is a standard in professional dog training worldwide.
Construction and how it works
A central plate (centerplate) spreads the pressure evenly to both sides of the dog's neck, taking the load off the sensitive windpipe. The links are rounded, with no sharp edges. An extra chain runs through the collar to limit how far it tightens, so the correction stays precise and controlled.
The leash clips into one of the two fixed rings by the chain. The collar goes on over the dog's head in the usual way.
Mini version - for smaller dogs
At 41 cm long with a 2.25 mm wire, this is the lightest version in the chrome-plated ULTRA-PLUS line. If your dog is of medium or smaller build, this size will suit them. Bigger dogs need a longer collar and a thicker wire.
Chrome-plated steel - a more affordable option
The chrome version is a layer of chrome over a steel core - a bright finish at a lower price than stainless steel. Over time the plating can wear, especially on the prongs with regular use, exposing the steel underneath, which can rust in contact with moisture. For occasional training it works well.
Adjusting the size
The collar's circumference can be matched to the dog's neck by adding or removing links (always an even number). That way the collar lasts a long time, even while the dog is still growing.
Important - for use during training only
This prong collar is intended for on-leash work during active training. It should not be used during free running, transport or while the dog is unsupervised. The manufacturer notes that any discolouration of the coat is not grounds for a complaint.
