The Herman Sprenger ULTRA-PLUS prong collar (a training collar with adjustable, evenly spaced prongs) in its 58 cm length is the classic model used in protection dog sport (IGP/IPO), and a go-to for experienced owners in everyday training. Six centimetres longer than the standard 52 cm, this version suits larger dogs with a broader neck.
Construction
Made of stainless steel - resistant to corrosion and moisture. The prongs sit evenly around the dog's whole neck, so with correct use they give a precise cue without excessive pressure in any single spot. A 3.2 mm wire and 4 cm links are the standard size for medium and larger dogs.
The ULTRA-PLUS system
ULTRA-PLUS is a length-adjustment system based on an even number of links - you add or remove links in pairs, and each change shifts the circumference by 8 cm. In practice this lets you fit the collar precisely to a particular dog's neck.
ClickLock buckle
ClickLock is Sprenger's patented buckle. It closes in one move, holds firmly under load and won't release by accident. On this model it sits at the top of the collar, and the leash clips into the fixed ring on the side of the buckle.
Black galvanic coating
The base of the collar is stainless steel - resistant to corrosion and moisture. The black finish is created by galvanic blackening of the surface followed by polishing. The manufacturer states plainly that the coating is not permanent - over time, at points of contact and friction, it naturally wears through, giving a patina effect.
Sprenger also notes that on dogs with very light or white coats, the hair may discolour where it touches the black collar.
For on-leash work only
This prong collar is intended for on-leash work during active training. It should not be used during free running, transport or while the dog is unsupervised.
Not sure this size is right?
A prong collar should sit snugly just below the dog's jaw, without sagging - that's how we size it. If you're not sure how to measure the neck or which size to pick, drop us a line and we'll help you choose.
