Herman Sprenger fur saver chain - long 4 cm link - Curogan - 4 mm

A Herman Sprenger fur saver chain (chain collar) for walks, for the show ring and for obedience work without a prong collar. This version has a long 4 cm link and is made of Curogan, a nickel-free alloy in a warm, golden colour.

Why a long link

The 4 cm links are what gives the fur saver its name. Bigger links do not close on the coat, so the chain does not pull out hair even on dogs with thick, long fur. Unlike a plain collar it works gently and evenly, and once the size is right it stays on the dog's neck for years.

Material: Curogan, nickel-free

Curogan is a nickel-free copper alloy developed by Sprenger. Because it contains no nickel, it suits dogs allergic to that metal, whose skin plain steel can irritate. It has a warm, golden colour. As an alloy it is slightly softer than stainless steel, which is why the manufacturer rates this chain for dogs of up to about 70 kg.

Goes on over the head

This model has no snap hook - it goes on over the dog's head, and the two end rings take the lead. A simple, classic build with no extra parts.

How to choose the length

Measure your dog's neck circumference and add 3-5 cm. Then measure the head at its widest point, across the ears and cheekbones. This chain has no fastening and goes on over the head, so on dogs with a very broad head - an American Staffordshire terrier, a boxer, a bulldog or a pug, for example - it is the head circumference that decides, not the neck. In that case pick a length no smaller than the head circumference, even if the neck measurement points to a size or two less. If the head circumference is larger than the longest size available, choose a chain with a snap hook or with a ClickLock buckle, which closes on the neck itself. The length given is the total length, including the end rings. Available in 54, 59 and 63 cm.
