Herman Sprenger fur saver chain - medium 2.5 cm link - black stainless steel - 4 mm

A classic Sprenger fur saver chain (chain collar) in a black finish, with a medium 2.5 cm link and a thick 4 mm wire. One of the strongest chains we stock, listed by the manufacturer as the reinforced version for large dogs: malinois, German shepherds, Rhodesian ridgebacks or Bavarian mountain hounds.

How a chain collar works

Unlike a plain collar a chain works gently and evenly, and because it is built from single links it does not rub the coat the way webbing does. Once the size is right it stays on the dog's neck for years.

Material: stainless steel

Stainless steel resists rust and water, so it needs no special care and takes wet walks, baths and daily wear in its stride. The 4 mm wire and the medium 2.5 cm link make an exceptionally strong chain, fit even for very large, powerful dogs of up to about 110 kg.

Black galvanic coating

The black finish is produced by galvanic blackening of the steel and polishing. The manufacturer states plainly that the coating is not permanent - where the links rub, it wears through over time and takes on a natural patina. Sprenger also points out that the finish contains nickel, which can discolour a light coat. On white and cream fur the Curogan chain is the safer choice.

Care

Wash with water and a mild washing-up liquid. The manufacturer advises against Diamond polishing paste and other abrasives - they take the black finish off.

Goes on over the head

This model has no snap hook - it goes on over the dog's head, and the two end rings take the lead. If your dog's head is clearly broader than its neck, the manufacturer recommends the versions with a ClickLock buckle or a Sprenger hook instead.

How to choose the length

Measure your dog's neck circumference and add 3-5 cm. Then measure the head at its widest point, across the ears and cheekbones. This chain has no fastening and goes on over the head, so on dogs with a very broad head - an American Staffordshire terrier, a boxer, a bulldog or a pug, for example - it is the head circumference that decides, not the neck. In that case pick a length no smaller than the head circumference, even if the neck measurement points to a size or two less. If the head circumference is larger than the longest size available, choose a chain with a snap hook or with a ClickLock buckle, which closes on the neck itself. The length given is the total length, including the end rings. Available in 51, 54, 58 and 63 cm.
