Herman Sprenger fur saver chain - long 4 cm link - light - stainless steel - 3 mm

The light version of the classic Sprenger fur saver chain (chain collar): a long 4 cm link and a thinner 3 mm wire. The manufacturer rates this thickness for medium dogs such as a labrador, a doberman, an Australian shepherd, a beagle or a dalmatian, up to about 55 kg. Five lengths, from 46 to 61 cm, leave plenty of room to get the fit right.

Why a long link

Long links have fewer contact points than a fine weave, so they break and pull out less coat. With the thinner 3 mm wire the whole chain is noticeably lighter, which tells on dogs that wear their collar all day.

Material and care

Stainless steel does not rust, takes rain and baths in its stride and washes under running water. It does not soak up water and does not hold smells. Plain metal can leave grey marks on a very light coat - on white fur the manufacturer recommends the Curogan version.

Goes on over the head

This model has no snap hook - it goes on over the dog's head, and the two end rings take the lead. A simple, classic build with no extra parts.

How to choose the length

Measure your dog's neck circumference and add 3-5 cm. Then measure the head at its widest point, across the ears and cheekbones. This chain has no fastening and goes on over the head, so on dogs with a very broad head - an American Staffordshire terrier, a boxer, a bulldog or a pug, for example - it is the head circumference that decides, not the neck. In that case pick a length no smaller than the head circumference, even if the neck measurement points to a size or two less. If the head circumference is larger than the longest size available, choose a chain with a snap hook or with a ClickLock buckle, which closes on the neck itself. The length given is the total length, including the end rings. Available in 46, 50, 53, 57 and 61 cm.
